So its now the waters turn.
Ki wasn’t too hot on the taste of the water, I didn’t mind too much though. It would have helped if it wasn’t warm. Ew!
They are a bit hard to open as you might have seen on the video, I ended up spilling a bit of it, which isn’t something you want to do in a survival situation.
125ml is nowhere near enough water to last any serious amount of time, especially in Australia, so you need to pack a few to keep you hydrated for even a day.
I think this product would be good in a first aid kit to use in cleaning out eyes and wounds because the water is sterile.
I also thought it would be great if somehow you could boil water in the pouch. I did try and ended up melting it :P

So, the low down:

Pro’s
Sterile water to use for first aid
it is water, so you can drink it
easily stored in the pocket of a bag or in a kit because of the packaging

Con’s
weird taste
not enough water in pouch
pouch needs to be re-sealable

There isn’t really much to say about water. So yeah. I do recommend this product but not as much for hydration purposes as first aid.

MainStay Energy Bars Survival Food review.

by Tamar on February 21, 2012

So SurvivalStoreHouse.com sent me out some of their MainStay survival food to test out and do a review on.
My sister and I went out for the day to test out the 1200 calorie Energy Food Bars. We didn’t eat anything but that for 24 hours.
First taste was good, they taste kind of like a lemon flavored shortbread which is basically what they are.
They start to get a bit mundane half way through. You really need water with it because they are a bit dry.
I would recommend eating half of a bar more often, so you have 6 small meals instead of 3 big ones.
I wasn’t really hungry the whole day, you just felt like you hadn’t eaten anything if that makes sense.
Lunch and dinner were the same, although I was getting used to it on the last meal.
I didn’t lack any energy, so they do do a good job.
I don’t think kids would have many problems eating them as they have lots of sugar in them.
It would be good if the squares/bars were packed individually so you could have one MainStay a day and supplement it with other food such as muesli bar, Cliff bar, dehydrated meals.
I would have some nuts and muesli bars or porridge for breakfast and snacks one 400 cal bar per day for lunch and then a dehydrated meal for dinner. That would be great.

So, the low down:

Pro’s
Small package for a whole day of food
Ready to eat right out of the bag
Good energy boost
Relatively cheap
Long shelf life (5 years)
1200 calories
Withstands high and low temperatures
Water proof
Not horrible tasting
Its not a worm!
Kid friendly
Easy to chuck in a BOB or in your car
No messy eating or clean up
Little rubbish
Easy to eat

Con’s
Bag needs to be resealable
Bit to sweet and bit to much lemon
Need more flavors
Bit dry
Bit artificial
Each bar needs to be in an individual package
Smaller pieces

So all in all, I give the MainStay Energy food Bars a thumbs up.

DIY simple leather knife strop. Under $10

Leather strop.

Leather strops are a great way to get your knife razor sharp. I made a two sided strop so I can use a compound on one side and leave the other side for the stropping. This gets an even finer edge on your knife. You will need some basic tools to make the wood part [...]

Camping, hiking food Australia

Good food that I take camping and on short hikes. I find that some things that other people take are hard to get in Australia, these things are easy peasy, My local IGA has pretty much all of it. A lot of what I suggest here is hydrated already so its not light, some people [...]

Survival space silver blanket

I have always wondered how much the humble Space Blanket would actually take. Well instead of googling it, I took the hard way and found out myself, which is always the best way of learning. It took me down to 12.8 degrees C before I began to shiver. I thought it would be a bit [...]
